After a couple of milder days, colder temperatures will return to the area this week, though the Olean area should avoid the worst of the winter weather that could affect other parts of Cattaraugus County. Monday will be a fairly seasonable day, with highs in the low-30s and a couple of snow showers expected. Any accumulation should be minimal. A cold front will arrive tonight, bringing daytime high temperatures back into the teens and mid-20s for the middle part of the week.

The National Weather Service predicts the Olean area will see plenty of cold weather for the foreseeable future, with temperatures unlikely to rise above freezing for at least the next 10 days. The first few days of 2025 will see a fair amount of snow arrive in the area, especially in parts of Cattaraugus County to the north and west of Olean. A continual flow of seasonably cold air over the Lake Erie will maintain accumulating lake-effect snows east and southeast of the lake through much of the coming few days.

The New Year will usher in a return to winter weather as colder temperatures and some snow are expected. A winter storm watch is in effect for Wednesday morning through Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, with heavy lake-effect snow possible and accumulations of greater than 7 inches in persistent snow-band areas in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Wyoming and southern Erie counties.

Those who still have travel plans for the period between Christmas and New Year’s Day should have little interference from Mother Nature, as the forecast calls for mild weather over the next few days, with some rain coming in on the weekend. “As far as Thursday and going into this weekend, we’re going to see temperatures begin to get a little warmer,” said Matthew Brothers, a meteorologist at the Buffalo office of the National Weather Service.
