Hawaii Island achieved a rare feat on Maui in the Island Insurance/HHSAA tennis championships on Saturday. Bryan Assi of Hilo High and Kiora Kunimoto of Waiakea prevailed at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Courts as the Big Island swept the boys and girls state singles championships for the first time since individuals were honored starting in 1962. A single Neighbor Island swept the boys and girls singles titles only one other time — Maui in 1992, when Ryan Ideta and Jean Okada of Lahainaluna did it.

The Saint Louis Crusaders met their moment. And, Benny Agbayani says, he’ll be around for more of them. After Brotherhood marched through the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Division I baseball championships last week, capped with a 5-0 win over Waiakea in Saturday’s championship at Iron Maehara Stadium in Wailuku, the former New York Met told Spectrum News he planned to stick around well beyond his second season.

The Hawaii baseball team got a taste of success at Cal State Fullerton’s Goodwin Field this weekend. With a little more work, they might get a second helping. UH picked up an important series win against CSUF with Sunday’s 10-2 runaway victory, setting the stage for a senior week showdown with UC San Diego at Les Murakami Stadium.

Bettylou Sakura Johnson has her breakthrough. The 20-year-old Haleiwa native put monthslong struggles aside to make the Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro in Queensland, Australia, her maiden victory on the World Surf League Championship Tour on Saturday. She outpointed Australian surfing legend Sally Fitzgibbons 15.33 to 7.83 in a dominant final pairing, then raised the Hawaiian flag in front of thousands of people at Burleigh Heads, a renowned spot in head-to-head surfing lore.
