Emmanuel Clase’s latest shortcoming was Joey Cantillo’s opportunity. The Cleveland Guardians’ struggling closer blew a three-run lead in the ninth inning against the Pittburgh Pirates at PNC Park on Sunday. Cantillo, a Kailua High graduate in his second MLB season, got the nod from manager Stephen Vogt for the 10th and worked a scoreless inning for his first career save. The 25-year-old left-hander issued a leadoff walk to Joey Bart but got Oneil Cruz to ground into a 4-6-3 double play.

HONOLULU — The Hawaii softball team kept pace with the top teams in the Big West by splitting Saturday’s doubleheader against then-leader UC Santa Barbara at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Milan Ah Yat’s go-ahead, sixth-inning solo shot gave UH a 4-3 win in the opener, but UCSB, which opened the week as the league leader, responded 5-3 in the nightcap to snap the Rainbow Wahine’s longest conference winning streak in six years. Friday’s game was rained out.

The Hawaii baseball team saw double in the worst way against No. 13 UC Irvine this weekend. UH (25-13, 10-11 Big West) dropped five of six conference games on its two-week road trip against the top two teams in the league, Cal Poly and UCI (28-9, 16-2). Rich Hill’s group embarked on the trip in third place and achieved only midweek nonconference wins over Santa Clara and USC, and an extra-inning comeback win at Cal Poly.
