Hawaii Island achieved a rare feat on Maui in the Island Insurance/HHSAA tennis championships on Saturday. Bryan Assi of Hilo High and Kiora Kunimoto of Waiakea prevailed at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Courts as the Big Island swept the boys and girls state singles championships for the first time since individuals were honored starting in 1962. A single Neighbor Island swept the boys and girls singles titles only one other time — Maui in 1992, when Ryan Ideta and Jean Okada of Lahainaluna did it.

Bettylou Sakura Johnson has her breakthrough. The 20-year-old Haleiwa native put monthslong struggles aside to make the Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro in Queensland, Australia, her maiden victory on the World Surf League Championship Tour on Saturday. She outpointed Australian surfing legend Sally Fitzgibbons 15.33 to 7.83 in a dominant final pairing, then raised the Hawaiian flag in front of thousands of people at Burleigh Heads, a renowned spot in head-to-head surfing lore.
