HONOLULU (Island News) -- It's one of the biggest grappling events in the world. It's called the "Who's Number 1?" MMA tournament and 12-year old, Makenzen “Makz” Wong from Ewa Beach will face Icaro Moreno of Brazil. The pair are the only youth athletes on the entire card and Makz is only the third fighter under 13 to ever be invited to the competition. Makz is the youngest fighter in the competition and he's the first MMA fighter from the state of Hawai'i to be invited to the prestigious event.

RENO, Nev. (Island News) -- Former Saint Louis standout Sean Yamaguchi didn't waste any time making an immediate impact at the University of Nevada. As a true freshman, Yamaguchi batted 0.324 and led the team with 72 hits. It was those types of numbers that helped him win Mountain West Freshman of the Year. It was a freshman year to remember for the Saint Louis alum. Yamaguchi helped lead the Nevada Wolf Pack to a Mountain West regular season title.

CHARLOTTE (Island News) -- It’s a special day for Waimanalo native Tetairoa McMillan who was drafted 8th overall in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft by the Carolina Panthers. The 22-year-old, who goes by the nickname "Nalo," is the highest drafted receiver to be born in Hawai'i. Nalo is also the highest drafted receiver to ever come out of the University of Arizona.

HONOLULU (KITV) -- Ben Jones is looking to complete a marathon in all 50 states by running in the Honolulu Marathon this Sunday. The 34-year old runner from New York has already completed a marathon in 49 states, which he has finished each of them in under three hours, and hopes to accomplish this remarkable feat. Hawai'i is the 50th and final state on his list. This is a journey that started way back in 2009 when Jones completed his first marathon in Virginia.
