DNR continues to work on derecho cleanup on some pieces of public land

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Nearly 5 years after the 2020 derecho, some places still look like a snapshot in time. Trees are down, broken limbs cover the ground, and massive root balls are exposed. A lot of that damage is on public hunting land. The Department of Natural Resources keeps pieces of property there, preserves them for conservation, and creates habitats for wildlife. Doug Wyman is a lifelong hunter. “Was hunting with my dad when I was like 7 years old,” he said.

This comes after an uproar over a now-deleted social media post on Superintendent Nick Trenkamp’s Facebook page. Around 2 community members and staff sat in the hallway outside the board meeting waiting for an answer.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - “I don’t like them, but I think it’s a necessary evil right at the moment,” said Benton Co. Farmer Lance Lillibridge. That’s what one Eastern Iowa farmer had to say about the President’s plan to increase tariffs, which is necessary. Iowa soybean farmers could feel a direct impact from China’s retaliatory tariff threat. China is the largest consumer of US soybeans. The USDA said it bought nearly $13 billion worth of the American crop last year.

Hiawatha Fire Station 2 ready to respond

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - The Hiawatha Fire Department said its new building means faster response times for those experiencing an emergency. More than 90% of the calls Hiawatha responds to are medical. At a ribbon cutting celebrating the opening of the new building, kids tested out their firefighting skills and walked around the new building on the north side of Hiawatha. Denise Stejskal said it was a chance to see all the latest equipment.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - A professor of criminology said police worn body camera footage should be made more available to the public, but it's not happening in Iowa. "When we make it so damn difficult to get the footage, we're losing that key part of it which is to be transparent," said Dr. Eric Bronson, a Criminal Justice Professor at Roger Williams University's School of Justice Studies.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Cedar Rapids businesses are dealing with the ongoing problem of thieves stealing copper from all types of places. The US Energy Department said a billion dollars a year and 96% of what's taken in copper. Cedar Rapids Police said copper was a hot commodity. It received a few reports each week of people stealing metal from construction sites, abandoned buildings, and A/C units located in out-of-sight places.
