JOHNSON CITY — One out from history. Three Johnson City hurlers allowed just one hit as the Doughboys defeated the Bristol State Liners, 8-1, in an Appalachian League contest in front of an announced audience of 2,541 spectators on Wednesday evening at TVA Credit Union Ballpark. That followed the Doughboys completing Tuesday's suspended game by earning a 7-3 victory over the State Liners. Johnson City led 3-2 in the seventh inning when the game was resumed.

Jalynn Rogers wasn't interested in sharing a state championship. When the Rye Cove junior finished deadlocked with Rylee Coates of Northampton in the high jump at the Virginia High School League's Class 1 State Championship last weekend at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, the option was given; jump-off or tie. While Rogers chose a jump-off, Coates had other ideas. "She actually chose to tie," Rogers said.

Jack Torbett has played for big prizes in his baseball career. “Playing in a state championship and a national championship is two wonderful feelings,” Torbett said. The former Science Hill standout won a state championship as part of the Hilltoppers in 2021. His Walters State Senators fell one game short of winning the JUCO World Series in a 9-6 loss to Salt Lake (Utah) Community College, 9-6, on May 31 in Grand Junction, Colorado.
