ISABELLA, Minn. (Northern News Now) - One person is dead after a motorcycle crash in Lake County Monday. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the crash happened around 2 p.m. on Highway 1 south of Isabella. The State Patrol reports the person who died was driving the motorcycle. The Minnesota State Patrol was not immediately able to share more details about what led up to the crash, how many vehicles were involved, or the name of the person who died. (Northern News Now) - Days after it opened, the controversial “Safe Bay” offering the homeless a place to park and sleep in the Duluth Vineyard Church’s parking lot is now temporarily closed after neighbors filed an appeal. City spokespeople shared the update in a news release Sunday. On May 13, the Duluth Planning Commission approved an interim use permit for an outdoor living site in the church’s parking lot, located on West Arrowhead Road.
DPD: Suspect accused of stabbing man in the neck arrested in Canal Park

DULUTH, Minn. -- Duluth Police have arrested a man accused of stabbing another man in the neck Thursday afternoon. According to Duluth Police, the stabbing happened in downtown Duluth near Lake Avenue and Superior Street around 12:20 p.m.Shortly after, the suspect, who police have not identified, ran to Canal Park and was arrested near the Cloud 9 restaurant, according to officers on scene. Police on scene say the victim is a man in his mid-20s and has a non-life threatening wound to the neck.
Northland teen convinces ‘confused’ school bus driver to pull over

SAGINAW, Minn. -- A teenager possibly averted a serious situation when they were able to convince their “disoriented” and “confused” school bus driver to pull over allowing more than a dozen students to safely get off. According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. near Highway 2 and Highway 53 in Saginaw Monday. Authorities received a call from a 15-year-old South Ridge School student on board the bus.
Ashland man sentenced to life in prison for double murder

SUPERIOR, Wis. (Northern News Now) - An Ashland man has been sentenced to life in prison after a double homicide in 2023. According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, Nathan Monkelien was sentenced on May 7. The sentence stems from an Oct. 14, 2023, incident in Ashland, where Monkelien fatally shot two people, 30-year-old Manuel and 27-year-old Luis Garcia Salas, outside Monkelein’s bar.
Thousands without power amid windy conditions Tuesday

DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) - Thousands are without power as strong winds gust across the Northland Tuesday. According to Minnesota Power’s outage map, about 3,200 customers are without power as of 11:50 a.m.Most of those outages are in Duluth’s Cody, Duluth Heights, and Piedmont neighborhoods along with in neighboring Hermantown. Meanwhile, Lake County Power is reporting about 350 members without power, with a larger cluster of outages south of Grand Rapids.

(Northern News Now) - A former Cloquet police officer has been found guilty of financially exploiting a vulnerable senior, gaining access to her bank accounts and attempting to inherit her estate worth more than $150,000. On Monday, those with the Minnesota Attorney General’s office, who the case had been referred to, announced the guilty verdict achieved during the criminal trial for Laci Silgjord.

DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) - St. Louis County has declared a state of local emergency and disaster amid the ongoing wildfires that have burned more than 30,000 acres and destroyed more than 150 structures across northeast Minnesota. St. Louis County Board Chair Annie Harala signed the declaration eight days after the Camp House fire began burning near Brimson and about a week about the first signs of the Jenkins Creek fire near Fairbanks and Munger Shaw fire south of Cotton.
