DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) - Lily Haldorsen was born near Trondheim Fjord in Norway in 1917. Her father heeded the advice of relatives and emigrated to Duluth in 1923 as his whole village waved goodbye. “My mother wasn’t very happy about but off we went, on a big beautiful ocean liner that had just been built,” said Lily during a 2023 interview. Later in life, Lily would paint a picture of that vessel that took her family to New York City.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chet Lemon, a three-time All-Star outfielder who helped the Detroit Tigers win the 1984 World Series, has died after a lengthy battle with blood cancer. He was 70. The Tigers announced his death in a post on X on Thursday. “The Detroit Tigers join all of baseball in mourning the passing of Chet Lemon,” the team said. “While he was a World Series champion and All-Star on the field, perhaps his biggest impact came off of it.

DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) - The St. Louis County Sheriff’s office has identified the canoer pulled from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Saturday. The body was identified as 62-year-old Saint Louis Park, MN resident, Robert Sydney James. Forest service employees reported they located a capsized canoe on Iron Lake in the Boundary Waters. USFS employees found James floating near the canoe, wearing a life jacket.

EVELETH, Minn. (Northern News Now) - 13 people are without a home as part of an apartment building in Eveleth collapsed. According to the Eveleth Fire Department, around 11 a.m. on Friday morning, law enforcement received a call of a possible explosion at the Essling Apartments. Upon arrival, crews immediately evacuated the five residents and multiple pets that were in the building at the time. Crews then confirmed it was a partial collapse and not an explosion.
