I’d pictured my college experience for my entire life, but let me tell you what: I had never imagined the start of my college career would be hallmarked by masks, isolation and the weight of a “new normal.” I spent my first year at App State grasping at straws to find a place for myself.

The Boone Boomerang: a phenomenon reserved for a quaint mountain town in the top west corner of North Carolina, during which those who have graduated from App State return to Boone and experience the college-town lifestyle from a new perspective. This phenomenon has called both recent graduates and professors back to the whispering mountain wind and the dining-hall-tray-sled winters. For some, however, the Boonerang hooks them in before they’ve even left Boone after graduation.

Vampire movies have a rich history in Hollywood. The bloodsuckers appear in cinema from all around the world, and have spawned everything from billion-dollar young-adult franchises to serious black-and-white indie movies about “important topics.” Their versatility is a blessing in this respect. Vampires can be used for virtually anything. However, the vampire’s flexibility is also a curse.

April 24, 2024 Nestled discreetly on 1167 West King St., Lucky Dog Vintage greets customers with a unique vibe and treasure trove of hand-selected thrift finds. Trevor Shue, a 20-year-old entrepreneur and the store’s owner, began his journey in 2018 by reselling clothes on Depop. What started as a side hustle in high school eventually blossomed into a full-time job for him just a few years later. Last year, after a brief stint at App State, Shue withdrew to pursue his entrepreneurial dream.

There’s a scene early in A24’s newest movie, Alex Garland’s “Civil War,” that tells the audience everything they need to know about the conflict raging in the film’s near-future United States. In that scene, the first major action sequence of “Civil War,” a water protest has erupted in New York City. On one side, protesters clutch empty water receptacles and wave handmade signs. On the other, riot gear-clad police officers strike out at the growing mass of angry citizens.

April 22, 2024 Ignoring the jumps from 70° to 40° the past few days, Boone is well on its way to warmer days. Days when Sanford Mall is full of students playing Spikeball, hanging in their ENOs and enjoying the sunshine. This is the time of year when Boone is in full bloom, serving as a sign classes are almost over. Unfortunately, it is also a sign finals are coming up, which means some people are trapped in the library and are unable to go outside during the beautiful weather.

On a dreary, rainy afternoon, the Plemmons Student Union came alive as students talked with local businesses, student groups and campus clubs about sustainability at App State for the annual Earth Day Expo event. Twenty tables lined the student union, each representing one of the 17 U.N. sustainable development goals.
