Looking back on the first half of the year, and June in particular, it’s been a hell of a few months. We’ve had a couple of Game of the Year fancies, a brand new Nintendo system, and more than enough showcases to keep our appetites whetted. Of course, we’re into a new financial year, it’s tax time, which means we need new games to spend our returns on. We’ve failed if we’re not rolling into August, quoting the great Troy Barnes.

In the cross-section of video game characters with legendary status and those that are very easy to draw, PAC-MAN is the one that springs to mind as occupying the overlap of both of those circles. For forty years, his quest has involved the tireless consumption of dots, fruit, and, when the right mood strikes, ghosts. His insatiable hunger was the singular premise of a Secret Level short from last season.

It’s taken someone ten years to think: “Hey, we could make a Rocket League game, only with people.” I know it sounds daft, because that’s just called soccer at the end of the day, or football if you’re one of those. Other than reductively referring to Rocket League as “soccer with cars,” there’s such a clear, fun-fuelled arcade angle to it that it’s ended up as so much more than that. It’s a generational title that has been a multiplayer lynchpin for over a decade.

I’m a big fan of everything Remedy does. I won’t go so far as to say they’re a developer who doesn’t get their flowers, because they do. I fell in love with their Lynchian story crafting during the Alan Wake days; however, as an intersection of economic game design, narrative, and atmosphere, Control stands tall among their catalogue without rival.
