SACRAMENTO, Calif — A major warmup is on the way after a typically warm and sunny late June weekend in Northern California. High temperatures Thursday will be in the low 90s and will likely be the coolest day in Northern California for at least the next two weeks. Even then, it won’t exactly be cool Thursday, with the forecast high of 92 degrees matching the climatological normal for June 27 in Sacramento.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — Northern California's reservoirs remain in great shape and well above historical average heading into late June. As of June 24, Shasta is at 90% capacity (114% of historical average), Oroville is at 97% (126% of historical average) and Folsom is 92% full (118% of historical average). Shasta, Oroville, and Folsom all peaked at near capacity earlier this month after an impressive Sierra snowpack melted and flowed into the bodies of water.

A change in the forecast has raised thunderstorm chances in the valley and the foothills through Tuesday evening. Upper level moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Alberto, the first named tropical storm of the year, will continue moving north through California Monday and Tuesday. It was originally expected the moisture would spark thunderstorms as it interacted with the Sierra but thunderstorms have developed in the southern and central San Joaquin valley Monday.

Temperatures soared well over 100 degrees in the valley on Saturday, and it was the hottest day of the year so far in most of Northern California. Sacramento hit 105 degrees, topping the previous maximum temperature of 104 on June 11. Although Sunday will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday, most of the valley will still reach triple digits. Sacramento may be one of the few spots in the valley to not reach 100 with a forecast high of 99 degrees.

Following a stretch of critical weather conditions, a shift in the weather pattern will deliver a nice couple of days of weather before more triple-digit heat arrives for the weekend. A shift in wind direction on Tuesday evening from the north back to onshore flow raised humidity values and ended the critical fire weather conditions. Smoke will still be present in areas however, mainly from the Sites Fire burning in Colusa County.
