The Mr. Charlie offshore drilling rig has been named as National Historic Landmark, in recognition of the property’s national significance in the history of the United States. Located in Morgan City, Louisiana, the rig – often referred to simply as “The Rig Museum” – has served as both a museum and training facility since the mid-1980s. The designation was made last December by then-Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland.

China has revealed that it has developed a compact deep-sea cable cutting device that is powerful enough to sever communication lines, according to a report in the South China Morning Post. The tool is said to be able to operate at a depth of up to 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) and has been designed for use with the country’s advanced manned or unmanned submersible vehicles, the report said, citing a peer-reviewed paper published in the Chinese-language journal Mechanical Engineer on Feb. 24.

In mid-March, the Chinese start-up company Sealien Robotics announced that it had sold one or more of its “deep-sea surveillance robots” to an unidentified Middle Eastern nation. The deal was reported by the South China Morning Post. Details of the deal were scant, and little was known about the buyer’s intentions, but the implications for China’s rapidly growing deep-sea robotics market “could be immense,” the report commented.
