Withnail and I is a sharp, witty, semi-autobiographical piece inspired by writer-director Bruce Robinson's days as a drama student and actor in London in the 1960s. He looks back at the 60s with fondness but also with a clear-eyed sense of the sobering 70s that lay ahead. We meet Withnail (Richard E. Grant) and Marwood, the “I” (Paul McGann) in their squalid London flat where they're afraid to even begin doing dishes because they suspect there is something living in the pile of decay.
