MANILA: Three Filipino cardinals are in Vatican City ahead of the May 7 papal conclave that will select a new pontiff to lead over a billion Catholics worldwide, following the death of Pope Francis. Cardinals Luis Antonio Tagle, Jose Advincula and Pablo Virgilio David are among the 135 cardinal-electors under 80 years of age who will convene for the selection process by what is called the College of Cardinals – considered a sacred act by devout Catholics.

The Philippine Senate has called for a formal probe into the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte and his subsequent handover to the International Criminal Court (ICC) last week. The investigation was initiated by Senator Imee Marcos, the elder sister of current president, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Ms Marcos moved to defend Mr Duterte's rights to due process, calling the issue one that has deeply divided the nation.
