The Buena Vista (BV) Board of Education (BoE) voted in a six-to-one vote to roll back Title IX policies to its previous iteration from 2020. This changes Title IX protections from covering “sex-based harassment” to only covering “sexual harassment.”Functionally, this shifts the process for addressing harassment based on gender identity from Tile IX to the district’s non-discrimination policy. This is because gender identity remains a protected class in the state of Colorado.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) will be available again this tax season in Buena Vista (BV). Volunteers provide assistance in the BV Community Center (715 East Main Street). Hours of availability are 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursdays. The final day VITA is available will be Thursday, April 10. This free, onsite tax preparation is specifically for low-income individuals and families. It is completed by IRS-certified tax preparers.

The Arkansas Valley Music and Dance (AVMAD) Buena Vista (BV) March Community Contra dance is coming soon. The event will start at 5:30 p.m. with a band jam on Saturday March 1. Dancing will take place from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.The dance is held at the Congregational United Church of Christ (CUCC) located at 217 Crossman Avenue in BV. These community dances are held on the first Saturday of each month from September through May. Dancers of all skill levels are welcome. No partner is required either.

A local news organization released an article stating that local Dennis Heap had joined the Chamber board. BVPD asks residents for information about the trespassing and theft. On Monday, February 24, the Buena Vista (BV) Congregational United Church of Christ (CUCC) discovered its pride flag was missing. Church leadership believes the theft to have occurred over the weekend. Pastor Rebecca Kemper-Poos shared information about the theft with CUCC leaders and local advocacy groups. The Arkansas Valley PFLAG chapter held a meeting at the CUCC on the evening of February 24.

Reservations are open for the upcoming BV (Buena Vista) Schools Proud Trivia Night Fundraiser. The event will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 14 in the McGinnis Gym. The ruling says the state is blocked from “expelling, punishing, withholding funds from, or otherwise disciplining” a Christian preschool in Chaffee County.

The Chaffee Housing Authority (CHA) board met Thursday evening, February 20, welcoming new board members, electing a Vice Chair, addressing both transparency issues and new board descriptions and discussing a plan to interview and select the final at-large member to recommend to the IGA members for final vote. Throughout the meeting, there were obvious attempts to cooperate and mend fences. The CHA board acknowledged how busy this board has been over the past 18 months.
