Like other technologies, WebAssembly has outgrown its initial purpose and is now showing up in cloud, edge, embedded, and other environments besides the browser. The WebAssembly Component Model (WCM) allows one WebAssembly binary to safely interact with another over a structured interface. With WCM, libraries written in different languages (such as Rust, Python, JavaScript, Go, and more) can interoperate in a true polyglot fashion.

This blog shares my experience with Wasm, focusing on two key tools, Spin — a platform for hosting static websites with Wasm — and Fermyon Cloud, a Wasm-powered serverless environment, and discusses their impact on enterprise applications and Kubernetes (K8s) environments. I also outline the current benefits of these technologies and the improvements I hope to see in the future.

In retrospect, the defining image of WasmCon 2023 was one that I didn’t even think to take a picture of at the time. In the style of a metro map, Bailey Hayes’ keynote laid out a set of work streams, all converging on a central point: the delivery of the first stable version of the WebAssembly (Wasm) Component Model. It asked: are we there yet? And the answer was: actually, pretty much, yes. The component model wasn’t the only story of WasmCon, of course.
