The Rochester Police Department is launching a new effort to reduce the number of opioid-related overdoses. The “Leave Behind Naloxone” program announced Tuesday will equip police officers with kits containing the overdose-reversing drug and information on harm-reduction strategies and resources to seek assistance. The kits will go directly to the people who need them most, according to Rochester Police Chief David Smith.

The former head of Rochester’s anti-violence initiative Pathways to Peace has been arraigned on a felony charge of grand larceny. Anthony Hall is accused of stealing more than $3,060 in property from the Coalition of North East Associations (CONEA), according to an unsealed indictment from a Monroe County grand jury. CONEA is a nonprofit serving the Upper Falls neighborhood. The alleged theft took place between Dec. 1, 2018 and Sept. 3, 2019.

Rochester Police have made an arrest in the shooting death of a 16-year-old girl that happened last August. On Friday, RPD announced the arrest of 27-year-old Reign Tapiato on a charge of 2nd degree murder and 2nd degree criminal possession of a weapon. On August 29, 2023, it was reported to city police that 16-year-old Jakarah Lopez-Moore had been missing from her house since August 27.

The New York State Workers' Compensation Board is continuing its webinar series to help workers who believe they contracted COVID-19 on the job. Joe Cavalcante, the Board's advocate for injured workers, said the webinar provides details on how and when to file. But he says the "when" component is very important. “Because you should be aware of the two-year deadline to file a workers compensation claim," advised Cavalcante.

Rochester Police are continuing their investigation into the death of Jakarah Lopez-Moore, whose body was found near Vanguard Parkway in the city last Saturday. The 16-year-old girl was reported missing August 27 and her body was found last Saturday in the woods near Vanguard Parkway. Captain Frank Umbrino said her death was ruled a homicide, but he would not reveal the cause of her death.
