Next to the bed Steven Rieger spends most his life in is a framed print that says: “This is my happy place.” For him, it is – his small room on the eastern outskirts of Melbourne is covered in Collingwood paraphernalia and basked in warm light. Steven, 37, needs round-the-clock care. He lives with cerebral palsy, is nonverbal and suffers from seizures – natural light can trigger them so he spends almost all of his time in his room.

Two University of Melbourne students have been recommended for expulsion and two for suspension for taking part in a pro-Palestine demonstration at the university’s Parkville campus last October. If the decisions are upheld, the students will become the first pro-Palestine student activists for whom suspension and expulsion have been enforced in Australia since the waves of student demonstrations against Israel’s assault on Gaza began in 2023.

For the first time, Victoria’s Greater Geelong has become Australia’s most popular regional town, ending a two-year winning streak from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. The latest Regional Movers Index report shows in the 12 months to the March quarter, the Greater Geelong local government area had a 9.3% share of total net internal migration, compared with the Sunshine Coast’s 8.9%.

A soup kitchen that serves hundreds of meals each week to Sydney’s homeless community has been told at the last minute that they will not be able to set up during Vivid, leaving them nowhere else to go. The Alfresco Community Kitchen runs on Tuesdays and every second Sunday in Martin Place, next to the train station in the heart of Sydney’s CBD.
