COLUMBIA — A CH-47D Chinook helicopter zoomed overhead, bringing strong gusts that bent trees and sent leaves and dust flying as it hovered above the ground. As it hovered, those in the military helicopter dropped off boxes filled with packages of food known as MREs, which stands for Meals Ready-to-Eat. This wasn’t for troops overseas. This was for potential Army recruits at Fort Jackson in Columbia. A crowd of teenagers and young adults, all planning to enlist, watched as the helicopter flew off.
