WEST ASHLEY — Police have arrested a 33-year-old man they believe is responsible for human trafficking after an undercover sting operation at an area inn. Johnathan Ahmad Dais of Summerville was arrested April 9 on charges of prostitution, second offense; assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature; and trafficking persons, first offense, according to inmate records.

A Charleston-based Coast Guard vessel has successfully completed another round of Pacific drug busts, offloading more than 24 tons of illegal substances at a Florida port. The Cutter James dropped off more than 44,500 pounds of seized cocaine and nearly 4,000 pounds of marijuana in Port Everglades, Fla., on April 9, according to a news release from the U.S. Coast Guard. The take was worth just shy of $510 million, the news release states.

ST. GEORGE — A woman has been sentenced to prison for nearly a decade after she neglected her children, locking them in a bedroom for more than 14 hours. This comes after authorities were unaware of her whereabouts for years until the death of her infant in 2024. Sara Constance Shakeri-Taylor, 40, of Summerville pleaded guilty April 7 to one count of unlawful conduct toward a child. The plea came shortly after a jury was selected for her trial, according to the First Circuit Solicitor's Office.

NORTH CHARLESTON — While seven people were nearby when two boys were shot and wounded at an area mobile home park, their statements were not enough to result in an immediate arrest. Police arrived at a home within the Hawthorne City Community RV park, 1990 Hawthorne Drive, just before 10 p.m. April 3, according to an incident report. When an officer entered one of the homes, she found a male juvenile suffering from both a direct gunshot wound and a graze wound.

DORCHESTER COUNTY — When a man swiped right on a woman in early 2024, he carried on a conversation with her for months. In reality, he was chatting with a male inmate at a county correctional institution in an entirely different state operating a catfishing and extortion scheme, authorities say. Christopher Lewis Dendy Jr., 27, was the inmate behind the scheme that stole $27,000 from the victim, the state Department of Corrections alleges.

WEST ASHLEY - Days after police found a victim dead inside an apartment complex, they arrested a man found to be the victim's partner, police said. Jayme Ryan McKinney, 44, from Charleston was booked into the Al Cannon Detention center on April 1 and charged with murder, according to a news release.
