For once, however, the Munich analogy is sadly relevant for present-day circumstances over the war in Ukraine. Munich is a story of appeasing a dictator in Europe set on territorial expansion. It is a tale of great powers “settling” the fate of a smaller nation in Europe without the latter’s involvement in the peace process.

Most people would agree that, if waste could reasonably be reduced within the US federal government, the reduction would ultimately be beneficial to US taxpayers. Unfortunately, the tactics by which Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—which has a stated aim of cutting $2 trillion of government waste—is pursuing its work are far from reasonable. In fact, those efforts create major threats to US national security.

Just finished this. I think it’s one of the best books on intelligence to be published in the last several years. An excellent & sweeping history of the Russian illegals programme, based on a great deal of original reporting and interviews with former illegals & their families.
