    The Science Museum of Virginia’s front lawn, named The Green, has plants for pollination, slopes for collecting rainwater, tall grass for muffling the sound of traffic and young trees for a variety of animals to call home. Underneath those trees, another benefit of The Green is forming for future use: shade. “These trees — they’re smaller now, but when they grow up, this walkway is going to be so nice,” says Jennifer Guild, the museum’s communications director.

    Alaska Public Media plans to expand its television broadcast service of south Anchorage through a proposed acquisition of KTVA from Alaska-based service provider GCI Communication Corp. The license transfer, pending with the FCC, will improve over–the-air reception of AKPM’s public TV service for up to 85,778 people, wrote AKPM GM Ed Ulman in an email, citing a coverage study by AKPM engineers.

    Twenty-five stations will start a Digital Transformation Program developed by CPB and the Poynter Institute Jan. 9 that features a greater emphasis on gathering and analyzing data than the program’s previous iteration. Participants will focus on one goal during the nine-month program as they learn about leading with new strategies, managing digital products on multiple platforms and growing digital audiences and revenue. A separate cohort of 25 stations will start the program in March.

    A new show from PBS Kids aims to teach kids and caregivers more about autism by featuring animal characters who display a range of symptoms and behaviors associated with the condition. The first 14 episodes of the show, called Carl the Collector,were released digitally Nov. 14 and are rolling out daily on broadcast. Writers have completed 40 episodes, and about half have been fully produced, according to director Lisa Whittick.

    A nine-week journalism training partnership created by The Latino Newsletter and New England Public Media in Springfield, Mass., is bringing student journalists and Latino perspectives to election coverage of western Massachusetts. Three high school students are working with Julio Ricardo Varela, a veteran of Futuro Media Group and founder of its Latino Rebels podcast, as part of the Latino Election Project.
