1 Introduction Delirium is a common and serious complication after major surgery that can affect up to 50% of patients in some cohorts [1, 2]. Postoperative delirium can lead to: functional decline; more falls; longer hospitalisations; greater healthcare expenditures and utilisation; long-term cognitive dysfunction; and increased mortality [3-5].
