By Camille LloydHalf of Detroit residents rate their lives highly enough to be considered thriving – but just as many are struggling (45%) or suffering (5%), according to the first Detroit Resident Voices Survey. Residents who are struggling or suffering in their well-being are disproportionately Black and Hispanic Detroiters and are more likely to live in the city of Detroit as opposed to the Detroit Region’s areas outside the city.

Nearly 70 mph winds ripped trees from the ground, took roofs off of buildings and left debris scattered near the area of Nine Mile Road and Paxton Avenue. “Roofs are on the floor, power lines are down it was crazy,” said one Ferndale resident.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The latest Gallup Center on Black Voices survey finds entrepreneurial ambitions are relatively high among Black and Hispanic women younger than 60. Majorities of Black and Hispanic women in this age group say they would be interested in starting a business if they had the resources to do so. More Black women than Hispanic or White women in the U.S. say they have plans to start a business.

However, findings from the Gallup Center on Black Voices reveal that Americans' personal experiences with police encounters also shape their perceptions of policing. Despite what news reports may suggest, most Americans report that their dealings with police are relatively pleasant.

Data for this study were collected using both mail and web surveys March 22-April 11, 2023. A total of 5,469 surveys were collected, primarily using the Gallup Panel. Supplemental responses were collected through a third-party opt-in sample provider. The Gallup Panel and opt-in samples were weighted independently and then combined using composite weighting procedures.
