I'm not in the habit of reviewing mobile games that are locked to a subscription service, and the only reason I'm doing one for TMNT: Shredder's Revenge is because I didn't realize it was a Netflix exclusive game until I had already almost finished it. As a flashy brawler capitalizing on a nostalgic franchise, this game does a pretty good job of generating those warm, fuzzy feelings for everyone's favorite pizza-devouring humanoid turtles, even though the enterprise can be annoying.

Sometimes I wonder if part of my beef with game subscription services is the payment model. I recognize that it's entirely possible that my impression of a game might be tainted by the fact that I am continuously paying to have access to it.

Each month, I want to share some less formal thoughts about the games I've been playing and my impressions of them. These might be game's that got reviewed for the site or not. As an individual person covering a storefront that is shoveling titles onto its store each day, I have time to dip my toes into a lot of it, but I can't always spend the time needed for a review. With recaps like this, I can give some games their due, even if I can't get a full review of them.

Some time has passed since the surprise release of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night ($2.99) on iOS, which made lots of gamers pretty happy. After all, it’s one of the most celebrated games of all time, and has inspired countless titles that borrow heavily from its trademark mix of combat and traversal. Before Symphony of the Night came to touch screens though, there were plenty of other games trying to bring a similar experience to folks.

Rusty Lake, the developer behind surreal and unnerving adventure games like Rusty Lake Hotel and Cube Escape, has turned 10. In celebration of this achievement, they put out a free game called The Mr. Rabbit Magic Show. While I am no expert on Rusty Lake's output, this game seems like a low-bar entry point to see what they are all about, which seems to be inspired tone-work, some absurd humor, and middling puzzle design.
