And what if saving lives actively puts your life and your people in a more precarious situation? It starts to get a bit more morally ambiguous. The Damned, directed by Thordur Palsson, is a story about this very predicament.

I love driving. Most of the time, I’m chilling out, listening to podcasts (like Watching Now on CouchSoup.com!) and trying to block out the world… safely, of course. However, I’m from little old England where you’re never far from the next town over. It’s not America where there could be hundreds of miles between gas stations. That would turn my afternoon drive into Stress City.

ATLUS have made a name for themselves in the JRPG space. They’re behind mammoth series such as Persona and Shin Megami Tensei, both of which have received critical and commercial acclaim. They’ve tackled school settings, inter-dimensional devils, and even god themselves, but none of these games has ever delved into the typical fantasy genre. That’s where Metaphor: ReFantazio comes in (which I’ll be calling just Metaphor from now on), and basically, it’s as if Persona met high fantasy.

I first heard about Wukong in 2022. It was one of those games where a trailer drops and is able to generate immediate excitement. The graphics looked crisp, the gameplay looked similar to From Software’s popular Dark Souls series, and it was based on a story that we in the West scarcely have a chance to absorb in video game form. Possibly the most famous figure in Buddhist myth: Sun Wukong. The Monkey King that ascended to heaven and was inevitably cast out.
