    Hundreds of people have gathered at a remote beach on South Australia's west coast in honour of shark attack victim Lance Appleby. The paddle out event was a chance for the local community to come together and mourn the death of the much-loved character who was taken by a shark in early January.     A legal battle over the burial of a teenager — whose death is the subject of a murder investigation — has been resolved by the South Australian Supreme Court. The court ruled the teenager, who the ABC has chosen not to name, be cremated against the wishes of his biological mother, from whom he had been estranged. In a recently published judgment, Associate Justice Graham Dart instead ruled in favour of the young man's sister, who wished for his body to be cremated.

    A lawyer for an alleged serial killer has told South Australia's Supreme Court that "contaminated" DNA evidence cannot implicate his client beyond reasonable doubt, saying a pet dog could have been responsible for secondary transference. Steven Leslie Hainsworth is standing trial accused of murdering his neighbour, Phyllis Harrison, 71, his aunt, Beverley Hanley, 64, and Mount Gambier pensioner Stephen Newton, 55, between 1998 and 2011.

    Tax office whistleblower Richard Boyle looks set to stand trial after his bid for a hearing in the High Court failed today. Mr Boyle first became an internal whistleblower in 2017, when he became concerned about operations in the tax office. When he felt he was ignored he went public on Four Corners about the culture at the ATO. He detailed how his area was instructed to use heavy-handed tactics to recover money from those with tax debts.
