Through the 24-hour news cycle and social media, teens and young adults are becoming increasingly aware of the challenges faced by Jewish people and our homeland, sometimes leading to feelings of unease and anxiety among many. However, we cannot let this worry persist. We must encourage our children to associate Israel and Judaism with feelings of strength and love, rather than fear.

It is no secret the global Jewish community is small, but what we lack in size, we must not also lack in strength. Maintaining a strong Jewish community is crucial for the wellbeing of Jewish individuals, fostering a deep sense of belonging. But it can be hard to know where to start, as well as how to instill this sense of belonging in yourself and in your family. Fortunately, organizations like the Jewish Federation are dedicated to strengthening the Jewish community in our area.

Following our recent celebration of Shavuot, the spring harvest festival, it is crucial to acknowledge the devastation Israeli farmers have endured since October 7. The typical joys of this holiday were diminished by our recollection of horrors faced by farms and kibbutzim, the heart of Israel’s agriculture. Particularly those near Israel’s borders in the north and south faced unprecedented losses and damages in the wake of these attacks.

The JFS Pantry provides perishable and non-perishable food and basic essentials to people in need. With the ACME Markets $5,000 Nourishing Neighbors Nutrition Security grant, JFS is able to assist people gain access to federal meal programs too. This has been a heavy couple of weeks for all of us—globally, nationally, locally, and personally. We all stand stronger when we lift each other up, and on behalf of Jewish Federation and the entire Jewish community, we are here to help. Once we overcome our grief, fear, anger, and the situational paralysis which many of us feel, we must ask: What can I do as an individual? What can WE do as a community? You and I are not over in Israel fighting for our country and endangering our lives.

Burt Rose and Barbara Cohen sort High Holiday donations from Beth El Synagogue, Congregation Beth Israel, Shirat Hayam, Temple Beth Shalom and community residents. More than 200 bags of non-perishable food was collected to stock the pantry shelves at Jewish Family Service of Atlantic & Cape May Counties.

Jewish Family Service of Atlantic & Cape May Counties (JFS), staff and volunteers take pride in helping more than 13,000 people annually in the region. For some, that means providing nourishing food, basic essentials, and baby supplies. For others, JFS assists with counseling, vocational services, supportive housing, older adult programs and more. Regardless of the need, JFS is here to help. However, we cannot do it alone.
