If you want a refresher on the school choice movement since 1950, you could do worse than The Death of Public School: How Conservatives Won the War Over Education in America, by journalist Cara Fitzpatrick. The book is easily digested, and while race and segregation are major parts of the story, it does not succumb to the simple narrative too often seen: choice is grounded in racism. The book has problems, but they do not disfigure the history too badly.
