Much of the West's wet winter and the dry conditions in the northeast were due to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation climate pattern, and now scientists are now predicting a quick switch to La Niña. In a La Niña year, Phoenix can often expect to see cooler temperatures and less precipitation, but it's no guarantee. Just because La Niña conditions have been observed, doesn't necessarily mean a cooler, drier winter, simply that the chances are higher.

After a full year of rapidly rising ocean temperatures, data now shows a new temperature record has been broken every day, more evidence that nearly 90% of rising global temperatures are occurring in the world’s oceans, according to NASA scientists.. Ocean warming is both caused by, and leads to higher global temperatures. Worsening greenhouse gas levels are not allowing heat to escape from the Earth’s surface, which the oceans then absorb.
