Veteran teachers always keep an informal list of all-time favorite students. It’s a tough call because I had many greats, but David Portillo is probably No. 1. Imagine my delight when his mom, Rosie Portillo, emails saying he wants to get together because he’s graduating from Chaparral High School in Temecula. Does a kid want ice cream? That’s my response. We agreed to meet where we spent fifth grade together seven years ago, Rail Ranch Elementary School in Murrieta.

Matt McCaffrey has been involved in Temecula roller hockey since he moved to the city as a kid in 1994. That was back when the games were played on blacktop at Margarita Middle School, almost prehistoric in terms of surfaces. Then a rink opened at Ronald Reagan Sports Park about a year later and to go from an uneven playground surface to a new space was a huge high, McCaffrey said. Time marches on and now it’s the sports park’s surface that desperately needs to be upgraded.

And after almost a decade of trying to make it happen, a groundbreaking is planned at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, for the Murrieta Holocaust Memorial at Murrieta Town Square Park, a project intended to inform people about that awful history.
