The temperature in Palm Springs soared past 115 degrees Sunday afternoon with the possibility of climbing even higher, giving the city its hottest day of the year so far, according to National Weather Service data. NWS meteorologist Sam Zuber told The Desert Sun at around 3:20 p.m. that the most recent hourly temperature reading at the city’s airport showed a temperature of 115 degrees.

A 24-year-old Whitewater man has been arrested in the nearly six-year-old cold case murder of a Cathedral City man, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. On Friday, June 13, Jorge Huerta-Arias was arrested in Whitewater for what the department says is his suspected involvement in the murder of Anthony Carrillo, a 19-year-old man who deputies found with gunshot wounds just after midnight on Oct. 26, 2019. He later died of his injuries at a hospital.

A car struck and killed a man walking on Highway 86 south of Interstate 10 Tuesday night, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash occurred at just before 11 p.m. on the southbound side of the highway between the interstate and Dillon Road. CHP Officer David Torres said a preliminary investigation has determined a man was trying to cross Highway 86 on foot when he was hit by a Nissan Altima. Torres said the Altima appears to have attempted to avoid the pedestrian but was unable to.

Reports of a large presence of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers at locations in Cathedral City and Palm Springs circulated online Friday along with videos and images that appear to show the agency’s officers and their vehicles. ICE had not responded to a request from The Desert Sun for information about the nature of the observed activity as of late Friday afternoon.
