    I began creating HyperDocs to provide students with a more intuitive and accessible learning experience, synchronously or asynchronously. Learning is inherently vulnerable, exposing students to potential judgments about their abilities while trying to align teacher expectations and student needs. When this alignment is off, students struggle to connect with the material, leading to frustration, disengagement, and fixed mindsets.

    Picture this: Your students are working on a group assignment where students compete against other groups in a classroom game, and the reward for success is a collective team prize. What do we usually see happen in this situation? This scene often ends with one or two students dominating the work in each group, completing most or all of the tasks, while others contribute little.

    Our students do not like making mistakes in front of their peers. As a matter of fact, I can say the same for many adults. This dislike leads to an avoidance of failure in the hopes of preserving notions of identity and self-efficacy. What I define as “fear branding” is the perception, often implicit in nature, of being outed as incompetent by one’s community.
