I want my words to be a testimony of gratitude to the Latin American Theological Fraternity for the 45-year experience of what I call ‘doing theology in community.’ For many people, theological work is a solitary task, and in the North American and European academic environment, it is sometimes a competitive task.

Every so often, I’ll ask my kids, “Do you know that I love you?” They always reply, “Yes.” Then I’ll follow up, “How do you know that I love you?” Their answers often involve things like, “Because you buy us stuff and give us stuff.” Then I ask, “But what if I didn’t have any money?

Is my faith authentic? Does my walk match my talk? Is there a gap between what I say I believe and how I live? Could I be deceiving myself, thinking my faith is real? How do I know? These are important questions, especially when something as significant as eternal salvation is on the line. No pressure, right? At New Hope, where I’m a pastor, we are studying the New Testament book of James (Jesus' half-brother).

New findings in the metabolism of the saffron apocarotenoids, crocins and crocetin, by the human gut microbiota

I started reading about horse training and quickly learned that horses have much to teach us. As I was reading, I came across two expressions used in horse training: “breaking a horse” and “starting a horse.” I’m guessing “starting a horse” is the more contemporary and humane way of saying the same thing. These terms describe the process of bringing a horse’s wild nature into a place of submission.

“Shotgun!”Kevin and I yelled this at each other as we both ran to lay claim on the passenger seat of the car. I don’t remember where my mom was going to take us. All we knew is that there was going to be a winner and a loser. The loser got the back seat and the winner got to sit up front, along with bragging rights. We wanted that front seat! The next thing I knew, BAM! I’m laid out flat on my back looking up at the sky.

"You Have to Grow Into Money!""Carlos, you have to grow into money," Charlie exclaimed. I’ll never forget that simple statement. Charlie was from the East Coast, and he was many years my senior. He was a silver-haired man, with what I would consider, an “old school” mentality. He was an old teamster. I don’t recall his reasons for moving to Hanford, but I do remember he had a knack for turning a phrase and making memorable points.
