    GRAND ISLAND – The executive director of First Light Child Advocacy Center in Grand Island is accused of taking $24,885 from the center’s funds between July 2023 and February 2025. Leah Smillie, 53, of 619 Meves Ave. is charged in Hall County Court with felony theft by deception. Smillie was arraigned April 23. Her preliminary hearing is at 2 p.m. May 16. Hall County Court Judge Alfred Corey set bond at 10 percent of $10,000. Hall County Public Defender Jeff Loeffler is representing Smillie.

    GRAND ISLAND – Grand Island’s City Council voted 9-0 April 22 to have Honeywell Building Technologies complete an Investment Grade Audit Agreement concerning energy use in some city buildings. Council member Chuck Haase was absent from the April 22 meeting. Six buildings underwent a preliminary evaluation: City Hall, Law Enforcement Center, Library, Heartland Events Center, Emergency Management Center, and Fire Station No. 1.

    GRAND ISLAND – The 29th annual Easter Basket Extravaganza on April 12 raised money for Project Hunger. The total amount of money raised won’t be known for about a week, said Doug Winder with Project Hunger. The event occurred at the First Presbyterian Church from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 12. Tables lined the church’s fellowship hall and were filled with baskets.

    GRAND ISLAND – Steve Severson with Davis Design gave Hall County Commissioners an update on the courthouse addition project and focused on showing them samples of floor coverings that will be used in the project. Severson said that Commissioners should receive a guaranteed maximum price in late May. Severson said the “vast majority” of floor covering with the project is carpet. “We are trying to be cost conscious when we can,” he said.
