We are seeing a worrisome rise in mental distress among young people in the U.S., a trend that began in 2011. Various studies show that young people are now the country’s most unhappy demographic, with unprecedented increases in anxiety, depression, and suicide. In a recent ranking of happiness in countries around the world, American young people came in at 62, behind Bulgaria, Ecuador, and Honduras. What explains this rise?

As COVID-19 swept across the globe, many nations, including the U.S., struggled to define a cohesive public health strategy to prevent the spread of the disease. However, in spite of the lack of a clear plan, improvised strategies of behavioral changes—e.g., masking, social distancing—slowed transmission until a vaccine could be developed.

“Look deep into nature and you will understand everything better,” said Albert Einstein. Gardening has always eluded me. Not the gardens themselves, but the work to make them. I have gone out of my way to see them — Brooklyn, the Bronx, London, Giverny, and more, but no gardener am I. I am lucky, though, to know people who create gardens and allow me to visit. I know that there are lessons in the gardens. Taking time to listen and look deep for those lessons is what I can do these days.

In previous work, Anne Case and Angus Deaton of Princeton described a disturbing trend, the now-widely recognized rise in “deaths of despair” – suicides, drug overdoses, and alcohol-related liver disease – since the mid-1990s. For a time, this phenomenon was hidden in overall mortality figures because of improvements in treating heart disease, but that progress stalled around 2010 for those without a bachelor’s degree.
