Life in a five-storey townhouse in Kensington in the 1880s must have been very quiet for Sir Sanford Freeling. He had recently returned to London from the Caribbean island of Trinidad to settle in the UK after more than 20 years of working abroad. Freeling, who had been governor of the island, was recalled to London in 1883, retiring shortly after and settling in lodgings run by two sisters, Ann and Martha Richings, on Neville Street, Kensington.

When I received a letter informing me my house was of historical interest it was a surprise — I don’t live in a stately pile or chocolate-box cottage. My home is a Victorian terraced house close to the railway tracks in Clapham, southwest London. I moved in, in 1995, after the four-storey house, which had been in a state of disrepair, had been renovated and sold as three flats, of which mine is the middle one.
