Women who drink coffee daily age better, stay healthier and thus, I assume, live longer, finds a 30-year study. Finally! Some good news, eh? Woohoo. No, it’s terrible news, actually. For me, anyway. I detest coffee. On the rare occasions I’ve drunk it to be polite, gurning as I force down the claggy hell-brew, it has turned me into a jittery, nauseous, nervous wreck with breath like I’ve just licked the corpse of a ferret that didn’t shower often.

The BBC has been criticised for the title of its new teen drama What It Feels Like for a Girl (BBC3), which is written by a trans woman. Maya Forstater, of the campaign group Sex Matters, said: “Presenting the idea of an effeminate boy ‘becoming a girl’ as an edgy coming-of age story is presenting delusion as self-discovery.” But this is the title of the memoir by Paris Lees on which this series is based, so I imagine the broadcaster didn’t have much choice.

Using actors to speak the words of islanders from their diaries could have been cheesy, especially the fourth-wall trick of showing us the 1940s set and camera crew, but here it paid off, the characters springing to life very Britishly. "The Germans are here! The milkman's seen them," one woman was told by a neighbour.
