The choir at North Buncombe High School was unable to perform at its annual fall concert due to the impacts of Helene. The district has 45 schools serving over 22,000 students, they were out for nearly four weeks, and the concert was scraped altogether. During the December school board meeting, that choir came in to sing some holiday tunes and one special song they had prepared for the canceled concert.

On Sept. 29, 2024, Andrea Reeves found herself at the Ashe County airport after attending church. Her community, and western North Carolina as a whole, was in the earliest stages of trying to assess the impact of Hurricane Helene, which had barreled through the region three days earlier. Volunteers were needed at the local air strip, and Reeves was asked to assist in the supply drops. Reeves is a realtor in the area and had no experience working at an airport. At 2:00 p.m., the first plane arrived.

On a stage in Raleigh, North Carolina Symphony’s Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto addressed the crowd at intermission: “Tonight is a very special night. I seriously mean what I say — we could not do what we do here without music educators.”Three of these educators from around the state stood beside Prieto as the winners of 2024 NC Symphony’s Music Educator Awards (NCMEA).

Doug Thomas has been driving a bus for Yancey County Schools (YCS) for three years. He starts his day running a route and after dropping students off, he heads to East Yancey Middle School where is he one of two custodians. Many of the roads on his route follow a river or a creek. On Nov. 18, 2024, morning traffic is busy with trucks carrying machinery and hauling gravel. Thomas passes piles of debris dragged from the water ways, waiting to be moved elsewhere.
