During Teacher Appreciation Week 2025, Gov. Josh Stein established by executive order the Governor’s Teacher Advisory Committee, and he announced that Rachel Candaso — a middle school teacher at Wellcome Middle School in Pitt County Schools and the 2025 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year — will chair the committee.

Plans to close the U.S. Department of Education have come with repeated assurances from President Donald Trump and Education Secretary Linda McMahon that federal dollars will continue to flow and services to students will not be disrupted. But a first look at what’s called a “skinny budget” shows cuts to line item after line item in education — a 15.3% decrease in funding, from $78.7 billion to $66.7 billion, according to Table 2 of the request.

Gov. Josh Stein joined the Smart Start Conference in Greensboro on Wednesday to highlight his priorities for child care and early education, but he also urged North Carolina’s federal delegation to oppose efforts to eliminate the Head Start program, according to a press release. Stein, Lt. Gov. Rachel Hunt, and Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green sent a letter this week to leaders in Congress, including North Carolina’s federal delegation.

The president signed an order titled, “Protecting American Communities from Criminal Aliens,” accompanied by this information.
