It doesn’t take much to see that today’s higher education system needs a restart. Colleges and universities across Canada face varying degrees of financial crisis and interference in research by corporations and governments. At the same time, students are experiencing growing inequitable access to higher education. That’s the bad news. The good news is there are proven alternative education models, but it requires moving from the current fixation on rankings to co-operation.

Dr. Esmeralda Thornhill, a luminary in the academic field of Black Women’s Studies, was recently honored by Concordia University’s Simone de Beauvoir Institute for her ground-breaking work in establishing the first university-accredited course on Black Women’s Studies in Canada. The course, titled “Black Women: The Missing Pages from Canadian Women’s Studies,” was introduced in 1983 and has since become a cornerstone of Black feminist scholarship in Canada.

From the early beginnings, she’s been no stranger to athletic endeavors, with a history in swimming, dancing, and a significant stint in basketball where she honed her skills as a point guard for Lindsay Place High School.
