Rockingham County cruised past Scotland, 5-2, on Friday night at the UNCG Softball Stadium to take game one of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A softball best-of-three championship series. Relying on their defensive execution, the Cougars maintained an early third inning lead and held the Fighting Scots to five hits.

GREENSBORO — It took some time for West Wilkes to settle in — just an hour-long rain delay and three innings — but eventually, the Blackhawks delivered. On Friday night at the UNCG Softball Stadium, West Wilkes defeated North Lenoir, 9-1, in game one of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A softball best-of-three championship series. West Wilkes’ (26-3) offense exploded after two scoreless innings, totaling 12 hits.

After the firing of head coach Mack Brown last Tuesday, the UNC football program named Freddie Kitchens interim head coach on Sunday afternoon. Kitchens has served as run game coordinator and tight ends coach under Brown for the past two seasons. Kitchens joined North Carolina in February 2023, after a season with South Carolina as a Senior Football Analyst and a 16-year stint in the NFL, including a season as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.
