    After the firing of head coach Mack Brown last Tuesday, the UNC football program named Freddie Kitchens interim head coach on Sunday afternoon. Kitchens has served as run game coordinator and tight ends coach under Brown for the past two seasons. Kitchens joined North Carolina in February 2023, after a season with South Carolina as a Senior Football Analyst and a 16-year stint in the NFL, including a season as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.

In its 28th appearance in the Final Four, the Tar Heels fell behind in the 22nd minute for the first time all season and for the first time in an NCAA tournament since 2022.
