Six months into the Pandemic of 2020 I booked a moving truck, not to somewhere "safer," but to my mother’s house in Queens, NY, a hundred miles downstate from the town and apartment I loved. But this isn’t going to be a Pandemic piece. This is going to be a “how-I-turned-my-most-dreaded-cargiving-responsibility-into-a-writer’s-residency” piece. I’m having a ball participating in artist ’s 30-Day Drawing Habit. I’ve been wanting to resume learning to draw since the pandemic put an end to the $10 weekly in-person sessions I was participating in locally here in Kingston, N.Y., at what was then called The Draw, but is now called The Department of Regional Art Workers (D.R.A.W).

One day I was sitting at my desk when I felt an intense heat approaching me from behind, as if someone were creeping up to me with a red hot radiator. It felt like it was going to set my back on fire, and it was not funny! Who would be insane enough to play such a stupid prank? I turned around, but there was no one there. It was my first bona fide hot flash. Soon followed by “night sweats.” They’re exactly what they sound like: waking up in the dark, drenched in sweat. I was very practical about it.
