SPRINGFIELD — When Bay Path University held its first Women’s Leadership Conference nearly three decades ago, an audience of 500 women gathered at the downtown Marriot to hear Elizabeth Dole — the first woman to hold two presidential cabinet positions and who would later serve in the U.S. Senate and run for president. The inaugural event held in April 1995 and spearheaded by former university President Carol Leary, was a big undertaking for the then-small women’s college.

Author and medical technology engineer Todd Zive was just 4 years old in 1980 when his father was murdered by an armed robber in the Easthampton pharmacy he owned, leaving his mother Eydie alone to raise three young sons. As the family coped with the trauma that followed, Zive never forgot the lessons his father, Leslie Zive, taught him about how to be successful in life: “Be a ‘mensch,’” he was told.

Peter Benjamin long believed the European chapter of his family’s life had ended. He knew that his father’s parents, Richard and Charlotte Benjamin, Jewish residents of Berlin, died in Nazi concentration camps. Benjamin’s own father, Gerhard, had managed to flee Germany before his parents were seized in 1941; his parents had refused their son’s pleas to leave their home in a largely Jewish neighborhood.
