The Michigan State Spartans have begun to build momentum on the recruiting trail, but there is still a lot of work to be done. According to 247sports.com, MSU’s 2026 class ranks 49th in the nation with seven commits. That is a fine start, but many fans want to see a class that falls somewhere between 25th and 30th in Jonathan Smith’s second year in East Lansing. The Spartans have only one composite four-star commitment: quarterback Kayd Coffman.

Michigan State quarterback Aidan Chiles will be one of the most intriguing players in the Big Ten next season. Chiles had explosive and exciting moments in his first full year as a starter, but also many head-scratching turnovers. He must cut down on giving the ball away to help the Spartans reach a bowl game next season. If Chiles has a better season than just keeping MSU afloat, he could find himself on NFL Draft boards next season.

At one point in time, Michael Mayer looked like he could be the Las Vegas Raiders’ tight end of the future. That was short-lived, as the team selected Georgia’s Brock Bowers in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Bowers has already become one of the best tight ends in the league. Mayer missed significant time in 2024, allowing Bowers to emerge as the top offensive option for the Silver and Black. Mayer never got back into a rhythm once he returned.

Wow! I bet this won’t change because of an NIL check!

Alabama guard Labaron Philon says he’s staying in the NBA draft and won’t return to the Crimson Tide. He’s already told Nate Oats his final decision. “I’m all-in on the draft,” he said. “They weren’t surprised. They knew it already.” Is the door closed on a return? “Yeah.” https://t.co/deukXlCs9A

For those disappointed with Michigan State’s offseason, I’d be curious to know what you wish they would have done. They added two guys who can shoot it well and a backup point guard with some upside. Plus, in-house guys (Fears, Carr, Kohler) are likely to take a step forward.
