I apologize for misplaced optimism, for recklessly dispensing hope like Halloween candy and not taking seriously the many masks evoking fear. They turned out to not be masks but real faces. It’s clear Donald Trump, the former and future president of the United States, is superior to me in assessing the mood of our country.
