On Tuesday, officials approved a $10 million settlement for the family of Sonya Massey, who was shot and killed in her kitchen by a Sangamon County sheriff's deputy in July after Massey called about a possible prowler outside her home. It's the largest ever paid by the county. In the wake of Massey's killing in Illinois, members of the community were outraged. The sheriff at the time of Massey's killing resigned, and Sheriff Paula Crouch took the position in September.

Last July, Sonya Massey called 911 to report a potential prowler outside her Illinois home. Two minutes after entering, Sangamon County Sheriff's deputy , who is White, fatally shot Massey, who is Black, in her kitchen. Grayson later said he felt threatened by Massey. He was fired from the sheriff's office and charged with murder. He pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.

A simple but impactful video submission on mental health was awarded first place in a nationwide competition, but the group of high school students behind it is remaining anonymous, known only as "The Voices Behind The Walls." The students who created the video are incarcerated and study at Travis Hill School inside New Orleans' juvenile detention center. According to its website, the public school serves about 40 students ranging from 13 to 18 years old.
