Mazda’s creatively titled, newly published ‘Electric Vehicle’ patent looks like the makings of an electric-powered MX-5, where the batteries are stored in “the tunnel portion of the formed floor”. The application – complete with some extremely useful illustrations (above) – details how such a sporty EV would use this novel approach, coupled with cells under the rear seats and passenger side, to keep things (specifically weight) even-stevens when the driver is on a solo trip.

Hyundai has revealed a new hybrid system it’s been developing for all those hybrid models it’s launching over the next decade, and the improvements promise more power and better fuel efficiency. How much more? The system – when plugged into the new 2026 Palisade SUV (bigger than the Santa Fe) in 2.5-liter turbo hybrid guise – produces 329hp and generates 460Nm of torque.

The extra-posh Mercedes-Benz Vision V van has landed in concept/prototype form at Auto Shanghai 2025. Presumably, the paparazzi aren’t far behind. MG has unveiled a boxy SUV concept it’s calling Cyber X. Following up to the sporty Cyberster, the Cyber X very joyfully brings back pop-up headlights. The MG Cyber X’s front end features a wrap-around light strip and a deep grille grinning with dimples. Frankly, the combination of those headlights, the additional illuminated bar and badge, the matte gunmetal paint job, privacy glass and dual-tone rims suggest there’s a transformer lurking under the shell of the thing.
