EAST PALESTINE, Ohio - Few physical signs remain of the devastating train derailment that blanketed East Palestine in toxic fumes two years ago. But under the surface, the wounds remain fresh. Norfolk Southern, under the supervision of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has undertaken a massive cleanup operation of the derailment site. The railroad expects to spend more than $1 billion on the cleanup and on improving its safety practices in response to the accident.

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio - Two years after a Norfolk Southern train derailment spewed a toxic cloud that drove thousands from their homes, freight trains with the same chemicals central to that disaster roll through town - with few steps taken by lawmakers to prevent another disaster.

I’m not a social butterfly. I’ve never been a genius. And I’m definitely not a gifted athlete. That’s not to say I don’t have friends, or that I’m dumber than a box of rocks, or that I have an irrational fear of sports. I do have friends. I’d like to think I’m smarter than at least most boxes of rocks. And photos obtained by The Chronicle indicate that I was a mediocre hockey player for several years.

After gliding into 2024 looking almost unstoppable, Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey skidded through the last six weeks of the regular season looking, well, pretty stoppable. The team’s fumbles in that final stretch cast serious doubt on the prospect of a deep playoff run. But with the ECAC Hockey playoffs now underway, those doubts seem unreasonably pessimistic — maybe even unwarranted altogether — in retrospect.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey capped off a miserable month with a 4-1 loss to Brown on Saturday, extending its winless streak to four for the first time since the beginning of the 2018 season. It’s hard to frame Quinnipiac’s January in a good light. The Bobcats have taken more losses in the last eight days than in the first three-and-a-half months of the season combined. “This isn’t where we want to be right now in our season with these losses,” head coach Cass Turner said.

NEW HAVEN — Quinnipiac women’s hockey fell victim to a combination of poor timing and sloppy play, taking a late penalty against Yale en route to a 2-1 overtime defeat Friday. The last time the Bobcats played the Bulldogs at New Haven’s Ingalls Rink, they left with their fourth-straight Nutmeg Classic title in hand. But on Friday, they left with nothing but their third consecutive loss and a sour taste in their mouths. The night didn’t start that way, though.

HAMDEN — Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to Cornell on Saturday, rallying to a 3-3 tie late in the third period before giving up the game-winning goal with under a minute to play. There was somewhat of an expectation coming into Saturday’s game that, no matter what happened, it couldn’t possibly be worse than Friday’s game.
