I recently finished the book Wintering by Katherine May for the second time. I reached for it again because I am having quite the winter — grieving the death of my older brother, feeling the weight of rampant chaos and hate in my nation — and I am trying my very best to lean into it rather than push it away. I had an extremely quiet and somber January, which is not new. What is new is the blanket of sadness that kept me company. I spent much of January in bed, both while sleeping and awake.

Last week, I shared my second annual Freelance Year in Review! You can check out 2023’s rundown too. Very cool collection (and infographic) of beloved newsletters. Johnston’s Liftoff is the perfect guide for anyone of any fitness level who wants to get started lifting. Her program is still the one I follow every time I’m getting back in lifting shape (like, literally right now).

It’s November 5: Election Day in America. Before I say anything else, please VOTE TODAY. Remember that you are legally entitled to paid time off work to vote in most states, and as long as you are in line by the time polls close, you have a legal right to vote. This is my first presidential election while living in Texas, and in a red state. I canvassed for Austin mayoral candidate Carmen Llanes Pulido, and I’ll be poll greeting for her later today. I provided voter info to everyone I know.

Last week, I wrote about the life-changing power of creative mornings and carving out a sacred space to meet with your creativity. Thank you to Mary for leaving this wonderful comment about my tech stack for writers:"This is the most helpful - and comprehensive list - I've seen for freelancers. It covers EVERYTHING from pitching to banking to story inspiration. And it's free? Thank you so so much.

One week ago, I finally made it home after five blissful summer weeks away. Since then, I’ve been in hardcore hibernation mode. I slept. Cuddled my cats. Watched a lot of Teen Mom. I cleaned and fully saged the house to get rid of the bad energy trapped in there since my cat Dusty went missing for two days while I was gone. I went on long walks along Lady Bird and greeted the turtles. I know I still love living here because I am overjoyed to be home. Now I’m rested and ready to take September head on.
