As Rhode Island's capital, Providence is well-known as the state's hub for food, arts and entertainment, but it's also the state's oldest town. Providence was founded by Roger Williams in 1636, making it nearly 400 years old. According to the National Parks Service website, Williams and a group of companions first settled near a freshwater spring in what is now the College Hill area of the city.

Because of that, there's some flexibility on when the last day of school is to make up for snow days and other potential unexpected closures during the school year.

If you want to say you've eaten somewhere that pirates used to frequent, there's a spot in Rhode Island for that. The state's oldest restaurant is over 100 years older than the country. First built as a home residence for Francis Brinley in 1652, the White Horse Tavern opened for business in 1673, making it the oldest standing restaurant in not only Rhode Island, but the entire country.
